investigating reality

I’ve always been fascinated by “in between” moments, suspended outside the realms of duality. The “pause” in these moments feels timeless. A sense of ease comes with balanced contradictions. Expanding beyond polarized perspectives allows a free space to emerge. The process behind many of my canvas and silk paintings relies heavily on shibori binding techniques. A process of stitching, binding or folding materials before adding any color, paint or dye. This style parallels the approach of walking up to the canvas with no plan or expectations- just a feeling of presence. The end result is usually quite a surprise.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Inspired by zen traditions, I look at many of these paintings as an energy map of the present moment, however calm, chaotic and constantly evolving it may be. I find my best work is created when I “get out of my own way” so to say, when I’m thinking less and allowing more. It’s a process of revealing, created by moments of stillness and chaos. Meditative in nature, the works invite a moment of pause and a directive, inward, towards the now.
